Capri Hockey Club Sponsorship - Sharks Donate $15,000
The Southport Sharks recently signed a three year sponsorship deal, donating $15,000 to the Capri Hockey Club.
Operating since 1985, the Capri Hockey Club (CHC) got its name by forming their organisation at a council leased club house and field on the Isle of Capri. Just last year that facility became unavailable to the teams, leaving them without a home base or training ground. Currently the CHC play their competitions and also train at the Gold Coast Hockey Facility on Musgrave Avenue in Southport.
The recent donation will see the CHC able to upgrade and purchase |

new club uniforms across all the divisions and grades. It will also allow the club to completely overhaul all the junior teams equipment with brand new hockey sticks, hockey balls, goal keeping equipment and training equipment. The purchase of a CHC tent will also now be possible, a vital piece of equipment shading players when they come off the field.
The Capri Hockey Club train on Tuesday Nights and the playing season runs from March to September. Should you wish to be involved with the organisation please contact Shaun Hogan on 0401 161 899.
Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave – Sharks’ members raise over $5000!
On Friday, March 14, the Southport Sharks once again hosted the Leukaemia Foundations’ Worlds’ Greatest Shave. This year the exciting evening included guest visits from four Gold Coast Blaze players, and the coach, Brendan Joyce (who shaved his head!). Sharks had five of our own staff brave the shave as well, managing to raise over $700 between them.

All funds raised will go towards struggling patients and their families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders and fund vital research into finding a cure.
Foundation representative Gillian Rumpf says “The Shave night is always such a special night! It is filled with the most exceptional moments. Entire families come along to support the Leukaemia Foundation, many with first hand stories to tell. Thank you very much to the staff and management of the Sharks for their continued support.” |
Southport Sharks in the Community
The constant development and growth of the Southport Sharks allows it the opportunity to give back to Australian Rules Football in Queensland as well as the greater Gold Coast community. The Sharks give support to a multitude of organisations such as local schools and hospitals, medical research institutes, sporting groups and charitable organisations.
Assisting in the growth and development of Queensland Australian Rules Football is something that the club is very passionate about and are fortunate enough to be in a position to make a real difference.
The Southport Sharks provide support for its junior club, school programs and provide funds to other clubs via the AFLQ Player Retention Scheme.
The Southport Sharks Junior AFC coordinates over 350 players, making up 16 teams from Under 8’s to Under 18’s. Approximately $20,000 per annum is provided to the Junior Club to pay for jumpers, trophies, photos, footballs and other playing equipment, with players attaining State representative status receiving further sponsorship. The Club spends another $100,000 every year on the upkeep of its three playing surfaces, lighting and ground maintenance.
As well as funding their own player retention payments, the Sharks contribute $60,000 annually to assist another six clubs in the AFLQ. The Club also helps finance player payments for the Qld Open State Side in the amount of $250 per player.
This generosity extends beyond the competitions in which the Sharks compete, with the Australian Country Championships recently sponsored to the tune of $10,000. The club also host many school games throughout the year as well as the National Under 16’s AFL Championships each year. The Southport Sharks was also a venue for the Australian University Games in September 2007.
Beyond football, the Sharks continue to show concern and compassion for local, state, and national charities through internal promotions such as:
- Leukaemia Foundation – The World’s Greatest Shave to Care and Cure
- Leukaemia Foundation – Ride For Life
- 92.5 GOLD FM – Give Me Five For Kids Appeal
- Abused Child Trust – Chariot Challenge for Charity
- Abused Child Trust – Spinning Barrel
- Rosie’s Youth Mission – Fundraising Breakfast
The Southport Sharks proudly continue to support the community that has made it such a success both on and off the field.
